Owen Thomas Phillips III, better known as Tripp ( = the 3rd) Phillips, was born on August 26, 1977 in Newport News, Virginia and started playing tennis with his parents, Brenda and O.T., when he was four years old. In Boys' 16s and 18s he was amongst the top 10 in the USA. He attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he majored in sports science under the guidance of Dr. Bonnie Marks (See our Ask a Doc feature). He turned pro in May 2000.

Our photos were taken in Atlantic City where Tripp won the doubles title of the $25K Challenger with Ryan Sachire (click here for details and pictures).

In his spare time Tripp likes to go to concerts (favorite bands at the moment are Long Wave and Old 97s). He also likes to read and is a big fan of Lance Armstrong's book 'It's Not About The Bike'. He also likes fantasy football and describes himself as "a sucker" for funny movies. "The most recent one I really enjoyed was 'Old School' and I am an enormous, enormous Owen Wilson fan. I think he is hilarious." We think Owen Wilson might be a secret brother - click on this link and make your own decision...!
