Both players played the same
number of service and return games - which gave neither a
service advantage.
With the exception of Puerta
having 1 more double fault than Moya, the match statistics
clearly indicate that Moya was the stronger and more successful
player in practically every category - winning 12% more points
than his opponent and more games.
So how is that Puerta won the
match (7-6 1-6 6-3) ???
Either it is because there is
something fundamentally wrong with the tennis scoring system
or
There is something fundamentally wrong with the ability of
statistics to tell us anything about the relative performance of
two players
or both....
